Care

Obsidian asks little of those who keep it. Dust or wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth; for anything more, a cloth lightly dampened with water is enough. Avoid abrasive materials and household chemicals, which can dull the polish that gives the stone its depth.

Where a piece is finished in metal, the same gentleness applies. Handle it as you would any fine object, and it will hold its lustre for a lifetime. Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass; it is hard and enduring, but like all glass it is happiest away from sharp knocks and hard edges.

Sinatra is defined by its geometry. Four angled planes of obsidian rise from a metal base to meet at a single point, in a form that is clean, deliberate, and architectural. It has the presence of a sculpture and the weight to hold a room, without ever asking for attention.

Each Sinatra is cut and polished from Armenian obsidian, a natural volcanic glass drawn from one of the finest sources in the world. The stone gives the piece a quiet tension, solid in the hand and almost liquid to the eye, and no two are alike; the depth, tone, and internal movement belong to each block alone. The metalwork is finished to the same standard it frames: quiet, exact, and made to last a lifetime of use.

Sinatra is offered in three finishes. Jet Black and Silver Sheen are framed in nickel-plated steel, cool and contemporary; Brown Burl is set against 24-karat rose gold, warmer and more classical in tone. The form is the same across all three; only the atmosphere changes with the material. It is an ashtray only in the way a sculpture is sometimes useful – set it among cigars, or leave it bare on a desk, and it was made to be looked at either way.

The obsidian pieces in our collections are designed and crafted by Vanakat, a specialist obsidian atelier in Armenia. Ashlar House is their sole and exclusive representative in the United Kingdom.
